Take the Syracuse, New York, student-run newspaper  The Daily Orange : It isn’t daily anymore. The paper prints just three times each week. Next year, The Diamondback  of the University of Maryland will be online only. Half the newspapers that still exist on paper say they don’t print as many copies. And UNC’s  The Daily Tar Hee l has cut staff pay and rented cheaper offices to make its budget.

Considering the problems in journalism, it’s surprising that the enrollment in college journalism programs is up. The Daily Orange  managing editor Catherine Leffert calls the layoffs and cutbacks disheartening. “But what keeps me wanting to be a journalist is seeing the effect that The Daily Orange has,” he says.

But journalism educators wonder, “Are we preparing young people for a dying industry?” Years ago, journalism graduates took low-level reporter jobs at newspapers or television stations. That still happens. But today’s jobs more often involve digital editing, social media production, and video streaming. Some universities are taking action. The University of Florida offers a sports media program. Several schools highlight statistics-driven data journalism.

The news isn’t all bad. Journalism professor Kathleen Culver says, “When I look at 18-and 20-year-olds in journalism and see what they want to do, I’m optimistic.” Maddy Arrowood is the student editor of The Daily Tar Heel.  She says her experience makes her more interested in a journalism career, not less. Her optimism “comes from knowing that people still need news. They still need information.”

Army veteran Wayne Dixon and his dog Koda have collected 50 tons of rubbish so far on an epic litter pick around Britain.

Wayne, 47, along with Koda, eight, has already filled 10,000 bin bags and the pair are still only half way into their trip along the coastline. They set out from their home in Lancashire almost three years ago and have covered 3,500 miles so far after crossing off Scotland, Wales, Devon and Cornwall. They have now made their way along the South coast to Brighton where Wayne joined a party of litter pickers for the Silent Disco Beach Clean to help remove thousands more discarded items. The pair's series of walks are in memory of Wayne's father John, who died in 2022. Funds are being raised for the mental health charity Mind. John suffered a kind of disease for many years but was an avid walker and loved coastal paths.

Wayne, who is also backed by Keep Britain Tidy, said, "You would think the environmental message about the harm caused by littering would have hit home by now but people still discard rubbish on the beaches which then gets washed out to sea causing marine pollution. I'm halfway through my journey round the coast of Britain and I've been astonished with how much rubbish I have picked up. It is truly shocking that the message is still not getting to some people."

We talk a lot about air pollution. Here in Hong Kong we always complain about light pollution as well. Then, there is noise pollution. It's the same in many cities around the world, and in Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, people have been complaining about the noise made by drivers who continually sound their car horns (喇叭). That is until recently, when something was finally done about it.

The Chief District Officer of Kathmandu had received many complaints about horn pollution. He said that everyone felt the use of the car horn in recent years had become excessive. Researchers in Kathmandu found that for about 80 percent of the time, it really was not necessary for drivers to use their car horns. Sounding the horn to make a noise had become more of a habit. It was no longer being used as it was supposed to be used: to warn people of danger.

At the beginning of the Nepali New Year in 2022, the local government passed a law to ban the use of car horns unless used correctly. Within six months, 11,000 fines had been collected by the local traffic police. The fine was about HK $360. A taxi driver in Kathmandu can make about HK $1,000 per day, so he could lose about one-third of his money if he broke the law.

We hear that it's important to acknowledge and work through our emotional reactions to negative events, yet when we do, we sometimes get caught up in cycles of rumination (反刍)—which can make us feel even worse. So, what is the best way to reflect on difficult circumstances without finding ourselves tossed around in an emotional spin cycle?

The answer may lie in a skill called "self-distancing", which features the ability to take a step back and view yourself more objectively. According to research, when people adopt self-distancing while discussing a difficult event, they make better sense of their reactions, experience less emotional suffering, and display fewer signs of stress.

But what might self-distancing look like in action? These two fiends—well call them Tom and Jessica—feel wronged, and they replay their argument in their heads and out loud with you! Jessica is thinking, can't believe he did that to me. ” And Tom insists, "She really hurt my feelings. They are each focusing on their own feelings. However, if you ask them to take the third-person perspective of a distanced observer, they might step outside of themselves and ask broader questions. Tom might literally wonder about himself, thinking in the third person, “Why was he so hurt in this situation?"
